    System dynamics-based modelling and analysis of greening the construction industry supply chain

    Increasing concern on global warming and corporate social responsibility have made environmental issues an area of importance to address for governments and businesses across the world. Among the Middle East countries, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) tops the list in terms of per capita energy spending and per capita carbon footprints. The construction industry is the major contributor to environmental pollution due to its size and nature of activity. The rapid growth of construction sector has a significant environmental impact with increase in carbon footprints. This paper analyses the environmental implications of the rapidly growing construction industry in UAE using system dynamics approach. Quantitative modelling of the construction industry supply chain helps to measure the dynamic interaction between its various factors under multiple realistic scenarios. The potential carbon savings and the impact of each factor are calculated using scenario development analysis. The paper has addressed in detail the various drivers and inhibitors of carbon emission in the construction industry supply chain and ways to evaluate the carbon savings. The paper provides an analytical decision framework to assess emissions of all stages applicable to the construction industry supply chain

    Anaphora resolution for bengali: An experiment with domain adaptation

    In this paper we present our first attempt on anaphora resolution for a resource poor language, namely Bengali. We address the issue of adapting a state-of-the-art system, BART, which was originally developed for English. Overall performance of co-reference resolution greatly depends on the high accurate mention detectors. We develop a number of models based on the heuristics used as well as on the particular machine learning employed. Thereafter we perform a series of experiments for adapting BART for Bengali. Our evaluation shows, a language-dependant system (designed primarily for English) can achieve a good performance level when re-trained and tested on a new language with proper subsets of features. The system produces the recall, precision and F-measure values of 56.00%, 46.50% and 50.80%, respectively. The contribution of this work is two-fold, viz. (i). attempt to build a machine learning based anaphora resolution system for a resource-poor Indian language; and (ii). domain adaptation of a state-of-the-art English co-reference resolution system for Bengali, which has completely different orthography and characteristics

    Kernelization and Sparseness: the case of Dominating Set

    We prove that for every positive integer rr and for every graph class G\mathcal G of bounded expansion, the rr-Dominating Set problem admits a linear kernel on graphs from G\mathcal G. Moreover, when G\mathcal G is only assumed to be nowhere dense, then we give an almost linear kernel on G\mathcal G for the classic Dominating Set problem, i.e., for the case r=1r=1. These results generalize a line of previous research on finding linear kernels for Dominating Set and rr-Dominating Set. However, the approach taken in this work, which is based on the theory of sparse graphs, is radically different and conceptually much simpler than the previous approaches. We complement our findings by showing that for the closely related Connected Dominating Set problem, the existence of such kernelization algorithms is unlikely, even though the problem is known to admit a linear kernel on HH-topological-minor-free graphs. Also, we prove that for any somewhere dense class G\mathcal G, there is some rr for which rr-Dominating Set is W[22]-hard on G\mathcal G. Thus, our results fall short of proving a sharp dichotomy for the parameterized complexity of rr-Dominating Set on subgraph-monotone graph classes: we conjecture that the border of tractability lies exactly between nowhere dense and somewhere dense graph classes.Comment: v2: new author, added results for r-Dominating Sets in bounded expansion graph

    Structural sparsity of complex networks: bounded expansion in random models and real-world graphs

    This research establishes that many real-world networks exhibit bounded expansion, a strong notion of structural sparsity, and demonstrates that it can be leveraged to design efficient algorithms for network analysis. Specifically, we give a new linear-time fpt algorithm for motif counting and linear time algorithms to compute localized variants of several centrality measures. To establish structural sparsity in real-world networks, we analyze several common network models regarding their structural sparsity. We show that, with high probability, (1) graphs sampled with a prescribed sparse degree sequence; (2) perturbed bounded-degree graphs; (3) stochastic block models with small probabilities; result in graphs of bounded expansion. In contrast, we show that the Kleinberg and the Barabási–Albert model have unbounded expansion. We support our findings with empirical measurements on a corpus of real-world networks

    In this project work, the performance of peroxide bleaching commercial bluing agent, and different fluorescent brightening on the degree of whiteness of cotton fabric was investigated and compared. Here all the experiments were done on cotton fabric; both for woven knit structures in exhausted method. Maximum whiteness is found by applying optical brightening agent of Synowhite 4KB brand of 1.2% on the weight of materials at 80oC for 40 minutes treatment of cotton fabric along with salt of 5gm/L after bleaching. Furthermore, the influence of surface characteristics of the substrate on whiteness index was observed. CIE whiteness Index was measured by spectrophotometer at the standard illuminant D65
